New law enforcement initiative created in memory of Tulsa officer killed in line of duty

It’s been almost three months since Sgt. Craig Johnson was shot and killed in Tulsa.A new law enforcement initiative, called the 2150 Initiative, was created in Johnson’s memory. It partners local, state, federal and tribal agencies.“Let it serve as notice that if you’re a criminal and you’re in possession of a gun, then we will come after you,” Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin said.Trent Shores, the U.S. attorney for the northern district of Oklahoma, it’s called the 2150 Initiative because that was Johnson’s badge number.“When I think of that initiative, I think of action. Action is what Craig was all about,” Franklin said.The goal is to keep guns away from those who aren’t supposed to have them.“When we see felons possessing firearms, we know that they don’t make good choices when they have firearms,” Franklin said.“Everyone deserves a safe community, free of gun violence, to call home,” added Tom Chittum, assistant director of field operations with the ATF.The man accused of shooting Johnson and Officer Aurash Zarkeshan is a convicted felon and should not have had a gun.“We’re not just talking about felons. We’re talking about persons who have been convicted of domestic violence. We’re talking about drug users and drug abusers. We’re talking about people who have been declared mentally incompetent by a court for some mental health reason. We’re talking about persons who are unlawfully in our country,” Shores said.Authorities will also target those who are providing the guns.“Using modern technology and the concepts of crime gun intelligence, we’re revolutionizing how we fight gun crime in America,” Chittum said.“Sgt. Johnson and Officer Zarkeshan are at the heart of our initiative,” Shores added.Zarkeshan survived the shooting and is recovering at a rehabilitation facility.
