EEC Board head sets up sci-tech council

MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) – The sci-tech council has been set up under Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Mikhail Myasnikovich, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Committee on Science and Technology.

Aleksandr Shumilin, Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of Belarus, took part in the first video conference of the council. Five issues were on the agenda, including prospects for the development of the Eurasian economic integration and cooperation in science and technology, operation of expert groups, preparation and implementation of interstate programs and innovation projects of the Eurasian Economic Union. Before the end of the year, the council is expected to discuss the draft interstate program “Integrated System of EAEU Member States for Production and Provision of Space and Geoinformation Services Based on National Earth Remote Sensing Data Sources”. The plans will also include digital, infrastructure and energy programs and other comprehensive research and development activities.

Aleksandr Shumilin said during the meeting that joint projects require effective tools to support initiatives with a clear definition of sources to fund them. He suggested the sci-tech council to use the positive experience of the Interstate Council for Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation. The interstate council is working on a draft interstate program of innovation cooperation of CIS countries until 2030. Aleksandr Shumilin also recommended considering possible sources and mechanisms for financing inter-country programs.

The Eurasian Economic Commission is a permanent supranational regulatory body of the EAEU. Its main tasks are to ensure the operation and development of the Union, as well as to develop proposals for economic integration. On 1 February 2020, Mikhail Myasnikovich, a representative of Belarus, became Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
