A Warning About Your Amazon PS5 And Xbox Series X Pre-Orders

As the world’s largest online retailer, it made sense for millions of people to try and order PS5 and Xbox Series X through Amazon during launch over the past couple weeks. And while the Amazon site did seem to be in somewhat better working order most of the time than its online rivals, if you did manage to pre-order a next-gen console from there, you have probably been unsettled by a recent email you’ve gotten from them:

“We’re contacting you about your order of (PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X/S) to let you know in advance that you may not receive this item on the day it is released due to high demand. We are making every effort with the supplier to procure more inventory. We will provide additional updates once more information becomes available.”

A wave of these went out when PS5 pre-orders were done, then I heard some people got them for Xbox nearly as soon as they ordered one. Mine came in for my Series X yesterday, three days after I placed the order. If you haven’t gotten one yet, you probably will soon.

It’s not uncommon for retailers to miss launch day delivery, which is why in-store pickup, when you can manage it, might still be a preferred option (if we weren’t, you know, in a pandemic where waiting in a giant line wasn’t a bad idea). But with Amazon, you can’t do that, and it’s also being the most vague about when these consoles will actually arrive.

My PS5 from Target, for instance, gives me an estimated date of November 12 (the actual launch date) to November 14. But Amazon? All people are getting is this email, and when you click the links to try and find an actual date, you simply get the message “We will email you when we have an estimated delivery date.” Is that a day later? A week later? A month? Nobody knows.

I didn’t want to pre-order from Amazon for this reason, but the state of Xbox Series X pre-orders was an utter mess and it was the only site I could get to work after 90 minutes of trying and sellouts within seconds elsewhere.

I suppose that I’m not missing out on Halo Infinite launch day given that that game has been revealed, but if I was say, looking to download and play Destiny 2’s Beyond Light expansion on Game Pass that day on Series X, the same day it launches, that seems like it won’t be possible if there are shipping delays.

Hopefully we are all just holding out for an additional email with an actual date that is on or close to launch. But between the pandemic and sky-high interest in next-gen consoles resulting in these instant sellouts and indeed overselling at retailers, I will not be shocked if there is some drama with both PS5 and Xboxes getting delivered a lot later than anyone was anticipating when they placed their initial pre-orders. And given all the huge games released that week tied to those exact launch dates, that’s really not a great situation at all. Stay tuned for further ominous email updates.
